Joe E. Newsome High School
Bloomingdale, FL 2003
The facility’s two-story “academic core” is organized around a series of linear exterior courtyards. Four one-story ancillary buildings (gym, auditorium, food service and administration) are linked to the core through a series of wedge-shaped covered exterior spaces which replace what traditionally would have been conditioned interior lobbies. Circulation elements (stairs, bridges and balconies) are open and oriented towards the courtyard, providing optimum spatial conditions for supervision and social interaction.
